Klosterburg by MavK

This pencil sketch was completed over a few days. I had taken to drawing outdoors but was frustrated because wherever I stopped to sketch, strangers would wander up to look over my shoulder at what I was doing. Would the same thing happen if I were sitting there writing my diary?? I doubt it. But there is something about doing art en plein air that seems to turn it into a type of performance art – a thing that must be shared, even if one is not ready to share.

In the end, I found a quiet spot in the garden and drew this of the Klosterburg (convent castle) where I was staying in Germany. The detail is a feature of my work and something I was told off for at school! Now, as an adult, I still believe that one can express a great deal through detail and that emotion need not always be impressionistic.

The bit that I like the most is the tree in the foreground. I love the contrast between the tree and the convent.

Thanks, Ava! Yes, I like that contrast too – the natural against the constructed.

Very impressive work Mav. And with only a pencil(?), I really love the “lighting/shading” here… Yes, outdoors has its own benefits… – I too Never listened to my so-called “art” teachers… and apparently, neither did Salvador Dali or many others. 😉

Thanks so much, Robert! Yes, only with a pencil. And what do teachers know anyway?? 😉

Amazing! I love the detail. It would be impressive no matter what, but it’s a plein air too!

Thanks, Emma Louise! Yes, it’s so tricky doing art outdoors, but I do love it! 🙂
